초록 (Abstract)

1962년 USIS가 제작한 <황토길>은 한센인 시인 한하운의 일대기를 담은 영화이다. 이 영화는 표면적으로는 구라영화이나 그 이면에는 미국의 냉전 헤게모니가 깔려있으며 민간의 박애활동을 미국의 해외공보에 수렴하고자 하는 의도가 담겨 있다. 이 논문에서는 1960년대 미국의 해외공보 활동의 변모를 보여주는 하나의 사례로서 <황토길>에 주목한다. 해방이후부터 1960년대 초까지 미국정부와 민간단체의 구라활동을 그들의 문화냉전 전략과 관련지어 살펴보고 한센병 계몽과 관련하여 USIS 영화가 담당한 역할을 조명했다. 그리고 <황토길>에 틈입한 냉전이데올로기가 시인의 삶을 어떻게 왜곡했는지 살펴보기 위해 영화와 한하운의 자서전 및 자작시 해설서를 비교 분석했다. 그 결과 이 영화가 사실과는 다르게 미국이 개발한 신약과 미국인 의사의 선행으로 한하운이 완치되어 시작을 시작할 수 있었던 것으로 그릴 뿐만 아니라 월남문인으로서 그의 정체성을 숨기기 위해 영화의 배경을 남한으로 옮겨 분단을 불가시화하는 방식으로 각색되었음을 밝혀낼 수 있었다. 덧붙여 한하운의 현존과 그 재현 사이의 모순에도 불구하고 한센인을 비가시화하는 ‘감각적인 것의 나눔’으로 인해 이 영화가 ‘봉합’에 성공했다는 점에 대해서도 고찰해보았다.

초록 (Abstract)

USIS Korea made a film, Litany of Hope, which derived from the leper poet Han Ha Woon’s life story in 1962. It was a PR film for relief of Hansen’s disease ostensibly, but it was made on the basis of American Cold War hegemony and had intention to converge nongovernmental philanthropic activities on the govern mental overseas information activities. This paper focuses on Litany of Hope as one of the cases which show the change of American overseas information service in 1960s. I research American governmental and nongovernmental activities for relief of the leper in the context of their overseas information in Korea since 1945 until early 1960s and specially shed light on the role of USIS Korea’s PR films for relief of the leper. To disclose how the Cold War ideology breaking in the film distorted the poet’s life story, I compare his autobiography and poems with the film. The film describes, unlike the fact, that Han Ha Woon made a full recovery with the help of new medicine invented in America and the help of American doctor’s goodwill. Moreover, it fabricates the original story to make the division of Korea and his defection to South Korea invisiblized. I additionally consider the distribution of the sensible which nonvisualizes the leper caused successful suture of the division between Han Ha Woon’s existence and his representation.
